During the committee's public-comment period, a Caring Place representative briefed commissioners on local food insecurity during the federal funding uncertainty.
"The last data show that there are over 17,000 families in Bradley County alone that are food insecure," the representative said, adding that roughly 40% of those households qualify for SNAP. The speaker explained that the Caring Place is offering an express service path for SNAP-affected families, expanding hours and coordinating with area partners, including the Chattanooga Area Food Bank, to increase distribution capacity and match service times across pantries.
The committee acknowledged the report and thanked the speaker for the update. Members and county staff noted the limits of local capacity to replace SNAP benefits, and the Caring Place representative said the organization will continue bridging gaps until federal or state resolutions restore benefits.
