On Monday the Onslow County Board of Commissioners approved an eight‑year service and upgrade agreement with Motorola Solutions to maintain and modernize the county's public safety radio network.
Emergency Services Director Bradley Kinlaw told the board the county operates an Astro 25 radio system used by county departments, the city and military base partners. The agreement will add centralized cloud‑based monitoring (described as Cyrus central management advanced) to provide real‑time visibility and anomaly detection. Kinlaw said the contract term runs from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2033, with a total contract value presented at about $3,333,317.80 plus taxes. "This will significantly improve the county's ability to manage and troubleshoot, optimize our network," Kinlaw told the board.
The presentation noted annual appropriations will be required and staff requested that the county manager be authorized to execute the agreement and related documents. County Attorney Brett DeSams clarified that the Motorola items covered hardware/software service for the radio system and are separate from ongoing CAD/records management discussions. The board approved the contract by motion and voice vote.
