FEMA awards Onslow sheriff $240,338 for a patrol vessel; board approves 25% match

The Onslow County Board of Commissioners approved acceptance of a Federal Emergency Management Agency ports and waterways security grant to expand maritime patrol capacity for the sheriff's office.
Sheriff Chris Thomas told the board the award totals $240,338 and will support overtime for deputies and the purchase of a patrol and response vessel fitted with radar, thermal imaging, and towing and rescue equipment. "This will significantly enhance our abilities to provide maritime and waterway protection, respond rapidly to security incidents, and support search and rescue operations," Thomas said. The full project cost is $320,450; the grant requires a 25% local match of $80,112. The board approved the project ordinance, budget amendment and authorized the chairman and county manager to execute necessary documents.
Sheriff Thomas and commissioners noted the county previously used an older vessel for waterway patrols and that the new equipment is intended to improve safety along the New River, intercoastal waterways and nearshore Atlantic waters that the sheriff's office patrols, including areas adjacent to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and New River Air Station.
