Denison staff report Rusk building demolished; owners must submit plan by Nov. 15; stakeholders meeting set on vacant-building registry

City staff told the Historic Preservation Board on Sept. 16 that the Rusk property in downtown Denison was approved for demolition after staff, the building official and the fire marshal determined it posed a risk to pedestrians and people working inside.
Staff said they have met with the property owners twice and that owners must provide a plan by Nov. 15 indicating whether they will sell the lot, reconstruct the building or pursue another option. Staff also said one of the property owners is awaiting insurance information, which is delaying their decision.
In related updates, staff reported several new signs and new businesses coming to downtown and said two applicants had requested alley signage. Staff announced a downtown stakeholders meeting to gather input on a vacant‑building registry; staff will present collected input to City Council before any registry is implemented. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers.
No formal board action was recorded on the Rusk property during the meeting; staff set the Nov. 15 plan deadline as an administrative follow‑up.
