McKeesport board honors student selected for national soccer program, retiring coach and record-setting golf team

The McKeesport Area School District board opened its Oct. 9 meeting by recognizing student and staff achievements, including an athletic milestone that school leaders called a point of pride for the district.

Superintendent (speaker S5) introduced eighth-grader Evan Durst and announced he was selected for the U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program, the multi-stage pathway the superintendent described for identifying top players nationally. “Evan, I just want to congratulate you on behalf of myself and the school,” the superintendent said.

The board also presented a recognition from the athletics department to Coach Joe Bobo, who was honored after 12 seasons and noted as retiring after the current year. Athletics staff described a new monthly recognition program to highlight support staff and coaches; a bus driver who consistently attended home football games also received recognition.

The meeting included a presentation to members of the high school golf team. District officials said the 2025 squad finished the regular season 11–6, a school record for regular-season wins. Board members and staff named the team captain and several seniors and thanked the players and coaching staff for their contributions on and off the course.

No formal actions or votes were required for the recognitions; they were presented as part of the superintendent’s report and committee updates.
