Barrington Elementary students introduce SOAR program; board hears informational mascot proposal for Beyond the Bell

Kavita Dhaliwal, principal of Barrington Elementary, presented the school’s new SOAR program — an acronym for Safe, Organized, Accountable and Respectful — at the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District Board meeting on Sept. 8.
Dhaliwal said SOAR was developed with teacher and staff input to address students’ academic, social and emotional needs. Students from Barrington described how the program works in classrooms, on the playground and during assemblies; one student said, “SOAR means to me to be respectful, kind, and helpful.” Dhaliwal closed the presentation by summarizing the school’s upcoming events and inviting families to participate.
Separately, Miss Cassidy presented an informational proposal to add a mascot for the district’s Beyond the Bell after-school program. Cassidy said staff and program participants were consulted and that students overwhelmingly chose a zebra avatar; she asked the board to allow the mascot to be developed and said the item will return for a formal board vote at the next meeting.
The board thanked students and staff for the presentation and praised Barrington’s student artwork. The meeting adjourned at 6:27 p.m.
