During public comment on Oct. 7, Lake Grove resident Katie Ashron asked the council for more transparency about the Maintenance & Operations facility project and how public-art funds are being allocated.
Ashron cited details from a staff memo that listed the project contract value at about $40,000,000.70 and said the artist call was originally estimated at $250,000 but was reduced to $174,998 for commissioned art; she also cited a $566,846 entry in the preliminary budget for a designed wall that she described as functioning as a security fence and asked when residents would see the artist selection materials and a council vote. "I feel like there's been what seems to be more confusion than transparency regarding this project and its allocation of public art funds," she said.
Public Works Director EJ Walsh responded during follow-up that "the call for artists is out, and it's not intended to be brought at this point this year. So it will...come back to council for council selection, but we don't have a date." Mayor Farrell and staff agreed to follow up with the resident and share information with council. Staff also said they would collect contact information from the commenter and provide the council with any updates.
The council did not vote on the art allocation at the meeting; staff commitments for follow-up were recorded on the meeting record.
