Federal Way proclaims October 2025 Domestic Violence Awareness Month; DAWN thanks council for support

Federal Way Mayor Jim Farrell and the City Council on Oct. 7 proclaimed October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, calling on residents to support prevention, victim safety and abuser accountability.
Ada Onyali, speaking on behalf of DAWN, thanked the council and described the nonprofit's work serving survivors. "Every night, women, children, and families find refuge in DAWN's shelter because of your ongoing support," Onyali said, and she added DAWN answers "over 400 calls each month" and has served "142 residents of Federal Way so far this year." Onyali also urged sustained funding and community involvement beyond a single month of awareness.
In reading the proclamation, Councilmember Honda noted that domestic violence affects people across race, age and income and cited national enforcement data included in the proclamation text. The mayor and council signed the proclamation and urged citizens to "band together to work to prevent and eliminate this crime."
DAWN also promoted community engagement opportunities, including an art show and resources at dawnrising.org, and asked residents to consider volunteer or funding support to keep shelter services available year-round.
The council did not take any formal legislative action on the subject; the proclamation is an official recognition urging continued community support and follow-up on service needs.
