MSAD 51 board adopts 2025-26 strategic priorities; approves district physician and music teacher

The MSAD 51 (RSU 51) board voted unanimously on Sept. 4 to adopt Superintendent Jeff Porter's recommended 2025-26 strategic priorities, a framework the district says will guide decisions through the 2025-26 school year.
Porter summarized priorities that center on the "1 campus" construction program (Geiger parking, the new artificial turf at Hutchins Field, a new maintenance/facilities building, the MIW addition and the pre-K-to-1 school), academic priorities including CKLA literacy at the elementary level, scope-and-sequence work in writing and math districtwide, renewal of the MTSS plan, and safety initiatives such as the completed Syntegix Scribe Alert installation and evacuation/reunification planning. He said staffing reassignments and transition committees will be underway to prepare for the new grade spans beginning in August 2027.
Board members asked for updates on safety measures, the pre-K work group composition, and college-and-career readiness beyond academic skills. Porter noted that a profile-of-a-learner initiative and MTSS work continue to provide social and noncognitive supports.
The board also approved two personnel items: the appointment of Dr. Charles Desai as district physician/health officer (moved by Megan, seconded by Sean) and the hiring of a recommended professional candidate as the GMS music teacher (moved by Annika, seconded by Kim); both motions passed unanimously.
The superintendent said the district will provide a midyear progress report on the strategic priorities on Dec. 18 and a year-end summary on June 4. No fiscal or program reversals were taken at the meeting.
