Shasta County agricultural output falls slightly in 2024; cattle, hay and apiary lead

Shasta County’s gross agricultural production for 2024 totaled roughly $89.38 million, a decrease of about $3.3 million (3.6%) from 2023, Agricultural Commissioner John Ingram reported to the Board of Supervisors Sept. 9.
Ingram said cattle remained the highest‑value commodity at about $26.44 million, followed by hay at $23.61 million and apiary products at $9.85 million. Nursery stock and strawberry production showed notable year‑to‑year variation; nursery stock declined significantly primarily because of reduced plant production, he said. Ingram also noted international trade continues to matter for local producers: the county issued nearly 400 certificates for ag exports to 25 countries in 2024.
The department continues pest‑exclusion and eradication efforts, Ingram said, monitoring more than 5,000 shipments and placing more than 1,200 traps countywide. Timber and forest products are reported separately and totaled about $32.4 million in 2024 per the commissioner. Cannabis plant counts were cited using Department of Cannabis Control figures; the department did not attempt to value legal cannabis production in the county.
