Council refers feasibility study on consolidating fire districts to committee

Councilor Dr. Fant introduced a resolution directing the county administrator to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study of Greenville County's multiple independent fire subdistricts, evaluating operational, financial and governance challenges, impacts on ISO public protection classifications, and options for consolidation into a countywide model or other structures.
Public commenter Sean McDonald, a former Los Angeles County firefighter and Glassy-area resident, urged the council to pursue such a study, citing potential efficiencies, improved service levels and EMS integration. "You have 30-plus fire districts. I think the money you could save by consolidating... you could probably sell some fire stations," McDonald said.
The council referred the resolution to the Committee of the Whole for further study and directed staff to coordinate scope and deliverables. Councilors noted the issue can be politically sensitive for independent districts but emphasized the need for an objective assessment of benefits, costs and potential impacts on response times and insurance ratings.
