Vallejo HRC schedules I Heart presentation and discusses meeting cadence

The Human Relations Commission voted to schedule a presentation by I Heart (a first‑responder services group) so the commission can hear about the organization’s mission and how it contributes to Vallejo. Commissioners agreed to place a status check and scheduling discussion on a future agenda and formally voted to add the I Heart presentation to the January commission meeting so staff and presenters have time to prepare.

Commissioners also discussed whether the commission should meet more often than the quarterly schedule set in the city ordinance. Staff explained that the commission may call special meetings if staff and facility resources are available, but changing the regular cadence to monthly would require a recommendation to city council and an ordinance change. The deputy city attorney and staff advised commissioners on Brown Act considerations and the logistics of holding hybrid or partially virtual attendance for individual commissioners, including the requirement to disclose the physical location from which a commissioner joins remotely.

Council liaison Matula encouraged commissioners to draft a work plan tied to any request for additional resources; staff said that requests for more money or standing meetings should be justified in a work plan presented to council. The commission ended the meeting having set the I Heart presentation for January and with staff tasked to provide options for special meeting dates and facility availability if commissioners wish to pursue more frequent meetings.
