McEwen Commission sets cataloging, preservation and programming priorities; approves budget tweaks

The McEwen Commission spent the bulk of its meeting developing a 3–5 year work plan focused on cataloging, preservation and programming/access and approved several routine budget items.
Commissioners agreed that cataloging should support preservation and access, recommending accession numbers, provenance records and a platform that can migrate existing spreadsheets into a searchable public database. A commissioner who researched cataloging options recommended professional direction supported by volunteers and cited TinyCat as an example platform; "TinyCat fees are $8 a month," the commissioner said when discussing hosting options.
On preservation, commissioners discussed condition monitoring, creating a conservation plan, and prioritization criteria (whether an item should be stabilized for handling or conserved for long‑term display). For programming and access they proposed coordinated docent efforts, partnerships with educators and a stronger public catalog to increase community use of the collection.
The commission set next steps: leads for each priority area will report a brief update at the Oct. 6 meeting and the commission aims to present an initial draft work plan for review at the December meeting.
On business items, the commission accepted the treasurer’s report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025 (motion by Chair Trumper, seconded by Vice Chair; roll call 5‑0) and approved reallocation of $1,300 of the City of Vallejo stipend toward security for art‑walk events (motion by Commissioner Beecher, seconded by Chair Trumper; roll call 5‑0).
The meeting adjourned at about 5:45 p.m.; the commission will meet next on Oct. 6.
