Summary
The Public Safety Committee voted to adopt a county mitigation plan that FEMA approved pending municipal adoptions; county staff said several towns have already sent approvals and more are expected.
The Columbia County Public Safety Committee on Wednesday voted to adopt the county’s multiyear hazard mitigation plan, a document county emergency-management staff said FEMA has approved pending formal adoption by local municipalities.
“FEMA has approved it pending adoption by all the municipalities,” the county’s emergency-management representative said, asking the committee to approve the county’s adoption so remaining towns can complete the local sign-offs. A motion to adopt was moved and seconded and the committee carried the resolution by voice vote.
Committee members and staff said the technical work on the plan is complete and adoption by the county clears the way for the remaining local governments to formalize their approvals. Staff reported four municipalities had already submitted adoption documents and additional towns were expected to follow.
The committee did not alter the plan during the meeting; the vote was to adopt the FEMA-reviewed plan at the county level. The committee’s adoption is a common prerequisite for municipalities to become eligible for certain federal hazard-mitigation funding administered through FEMA.
The committee adjourned to the next items on the agenda after carrying the resolution.
