Residents told the City of Maitland council that a rough railroad crossing at Lake Avenue and worsening school drop‑off congestion are creating daily safety hazards and asked the city to push rail operators and school officials to act.
"You practically have to stop to go over the railroad tracks," said a resident identifying herself as Sue, urging the city to partner with CSX and SunRail and to involve FDOT. She described the crossing as worse than before and a hazard for drivers and people behind them.
Jen Locke, of the Nateman Club neighborhood, described recurring morning and afternoon congestion tied to Orange Wood Christian School and the recent opening of St. Anthony's, saying blocked intersections and illegal U‑turns have made exiting the neighborhood dangerous. "This is not simply an inconvenience ... it's become a risky safety issue in the area," Locke said. She requested copies of the original traffic impact analysis, any recent studies, a summary of mitigation measures tied to the school's approval, and immediate assistance to initiate a cross‑jurisdictional response involving Orange and Seminole counties.
Council members acknowledged the concerns and said staff would look into options, noting the city can coordinate with SunRail and FDOT and can send an engineer to review conditions. Residents offered to organize petitions and to provide additional documentation.
