Parent tells Valley Central board that poor field conditions caused her son's season-ending injury

During the public-comment portion of the board meeting, Tara Gianoni, a resident of the Village of Montgomery and mother of two Valley Central students, described hazardous field conditions at the high-school varsity field and asked the board who is responsible for maintenance.
Gianoni said the field was "an overgrown crabgrass ridden plain surface" with "bald spots with no grass whatsoever" and "divots and unattended grass that hasn't been consistently cared for for a long time." She told trustees that at the recent home opener her son suffered a broken leg after his foot "locked out, planting his foot in one of the crabgrama patches" and that his season is now over.
"I am just merely asking for safe field conditions for all of our student athletes," Gianoni said, and requested details about recent aeration, seeding, weed treatments and irrigation operation.
Board members asked for a written copy of her remarks and the president asked staff to receive that information. No immediate remediation plan was announced during public comment; board members indicated they would forward her concerns to staff for investigation and follow-up.
