Valley Central reviews fleet electrification plan, consultants outline large power and cost implications
Summary
Consultants told the Valley Central School District board that electrifying the bus fleet is largely feasible today but could raise peak power needs by roughly 3.8 megawatts without charge management; consultants outlined battery-storage and phased charger strategies and flagged state deadlines for fossil-fuel bus purchases.
Valley Central School District heard a technical briefing from CPL Architecture & Engineering on the district's fleet electrification plan, which consultants said is largely feasible but will require significant planning and infrastructure investment.
"There's a 92% feasibility," consultant Greg Royer told the board, summarizing route-by-route modeling that found most current routes can be served by electric buses with today's technology. Royer said a handful of longer routes would require either midday charging or future battery improvements.
Royer and CPL colleague Chris Ladany told the board a full conversion could create a peak additional power requirement "about 3.8 megawatts" if all buses charged at once. Royer said charge-management systems and on-site battery…
