Local working group wins county approval to attach Granite County to Forest Service letter

Sean Steinbach, co‑chair of the Beaverhead‑Deerlodge working group, asked the commissioners to add Granite County to a draft letter asking the Forest Service to adopt a legally enforceable travel‑management plan across the forest. He told the board the region has lacked a binding travel‑management plan for more than 20 years and that unmanaged use is causing resource damage and enforcement pressure on local agencies.
"We've been pushing the Forest Service to get travel management in place...we feel that commissioners hold a huge amount of sway with our elected officials," Steinbach said. The working group requested a simple endorsement: add the county's name to the list of supporters or authorize a short letter of support.
Commissioners discussed the request, clarified they would add the county's name to the existing draft and, by motion and second, approved placing the county on the letter of support. Staff said they would circulate the finalized letter and copy the working group when it is sent.
