Margate commission approves 4% COLA for nonbargaining city employees

The Margate City Commission voted unanimously on Aug. 20 to approve a 4% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for nonbargaining city employees, effective Oct. 1, 2025 through Sept. 30, 2026.
Staff described the resolution as an implementation of recommendations from a salary study, and a commissioner moved and seconded the measure. Several members of the public urged that first responders also receive increased pay. The presiding officer clarified the measure covers nonbargaining employees only and that police and fire pay are subject to collective bargaining; the commission said negotiations with the police have concluded and discussions with the fire union are ongoing.
The resolution passed on a roll-call vote. Commissioners said the city will continue to negotiate with bargaining units and that the COLA for nonbargaining staff is separate from any union settlements.
