Galena Park ISD board approves insurance renewal, policy updates and consent agendas; bond work update provided

At its Aug. 11 meeting, the Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees approved a series of routine but consequential administrative items including an insurance renewal, TASB policy updates and consent agenda packages, and heard a facilities and bond program update.

Trustees voted to renew general liability, auto liability, physical damage, educators' legal liability and crime insurance for the policy term 09/01/2025–09/01/2026 under contract F0703 at an annual premium of $373,891. Trustee Norma Hernandez moved the insurance renewal; Trustee Amanda Arabia seconded. The board recorded the motion as carrying 6–0 with one abstention.

On policies, trustees adopted the TASB Local Policy Manual Update 1‑25 (first and final reading) and approved multiple local policy revisions presented by Vivian Killian, executive director of elementary staffing and governmental relations. Approved policy files included EFB (instructional resources), FD (admissions), FFA (student welfare, wellness and health services), FM (student activities) and FNCE (personal communication devices). Motions were made by trustees and carried as recorded.

Consent agendas — general, construction and financial — were approved by unanimous votes. The construction consent approval follows facilities presentations from Ed Martyr, who reported progress on the 2016 bond closeouts (Galena Park High School Phase 2, Ivern Elementary), Cimarron Elementary design development and a Phase 3 fieldhouse contract for Galena Park High School that the presenter said was ready for award. The financial consent package included tax collection and bond program financial reports and other monthly reports presented to the board for information.

Trustees also named a delegate (Amanda Erevia) and alternate (Jose Jimenez) to the Texas Association of School Boards delegate assembly scheduled for Sept. 13, 2025.
