Sweetwater defers four development items after residents raise relocation, transparency concerns

The City Commission of the City of Sweetwater voted Sept. 8 to defer four agenda items related to comprehensive-plan changes to Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. after the applicant asked for additional time to revise development language.
Attorney Andrew Adios, representing the applicant, told the commission the team needed to "update that language" and requested a date certain of Oct. 29. Commissioner Yanez moved for the deferral and Commissioner Reynaldo Rey seconded; the motion carried by voice vote.
The deferral followed several public comments about potential effects on mobile-home residents. Attorney David Winker said he had submitted a written request to the city clerk and city attorney "requesting that study" required by Florida law regarding relocation of residents potentially affected by rezoning. Resident Enrique Celaya, speaking for about 250 people at Liv Abner Mobile Home Park, said many residents have no acceptable relocation options and appealed to the commission to preserve housing opportunities for elderly and disabled neighbors. "We don't have a place to go," Celaya said.
Alejandro Martinez urged greater transparency in commission communications and outreach, contrasting an unannounced 30-minute meeting with a widely promoted private business post and suggesting more routine public-facing engagement.
City staff and the city attorney repeatedly cautioned that ongoing litigation limits what officials can say about specific pending matters; the commission therefore confined its actions to scheduling and procedural matters. The deferral means the items will return to the commission on Oct. 29 at 6:00 p.m. in the City Commission Chambers, 500 Southwest 109 Avenue.
Next steps: the commission will hear the deferred items on Oct. 29; residents seeking further information were advised to monitor the city clerk's agenda packet and filings with the city.
