The Smithville Board of Aldermen approved the fiscal year 2026 annual operating budget on first reading and created a public safety sales tax fund.
Alderman Atkins moved approval of bill 3081‑25 (FY2026 budget) for its first reading; roll call passed 6‑0. The ordinance adopts the city’s FY26 operating budget and authorizes expenditures. The board also approved bill 3082‑25 creating the public safety sales tax fund on first reading by unanimous roll call. City Administrator Miss Wagner told the board that collection of the public safety sales tax began Oct. 1 and that receipts should reflect an 8.975% rate (excluding special improvement districts). Wagner said the Department of Revenue will perform a year‑end true‑up and she proposed a three‑member public sales tax review committee to meet periodically and review expenditures against the budget.
What happens next: the budget will proceed through required readings to final adoption; staff will set up the public safety sales tax fund accounting and convene the review committee as directed by the board.
