Dion Gordon, president and CEO of TEC Birmingham, described the organization’s work since 2002 across marketing, K–12 and adult workforce programs, and investment initiatives. Gordon said the accelerator answers a critical question about how the region will not only adapt to technological change but "thrive" in it, and he noted recent events that brought more than 1,400 attendees to the region. He added, "we'll be doubling the amount that we give to our entrepreneurs," as the organization expands pitch and funding opportunities.
The presentation cited expected returns on the investment including direct jobs tied to the accelerator, engagement of more than 400 students and young professionals through programming, an estimated $5,400,000 in economic impact and roughly $12,500,000 in media exposure generated through programs and events. Commissioners asked questions about partnerships; staff and presenters said Auburn University is expected to be a significant partner, pending final agreements.
