San Bernardino County board honors fallen deputy, approves $50,000 support for family

The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors adjourned its meeting Monday in memory of Deputy Andrew Nunez, who was killed in the line of duty Oct. 27 while responding to a call, and announced immediate financial support for his family. Sheriff Shannon Dicus told the board, "The board today is donating $50,000," and said the county had provided similar assistance to other families.
Chair Rau opened the meeting and asked the board to observe the loss, noting Deputy Nunez served the Rancho Cucamonga area and is survived by his wife, who is expecting their second child, and a young daughter. Supervisor Armendariz described the deputy as a Second District resident who "gave his life to our community," and other supervisors offered condolences and personal remembrances.
Sheriff Dicus described the strain on the Rancho Station and the department, citing recent shootings and line-of-duty deaths at several stations, and said the department will support the prosecutor in pursuing charges. Dicus introduced Pastor Diego Mesa, who led the invocation and support efforts for deputies and families.
The announcement included an explicit pledge of financial and community support and recognition of the sacrifices made by first responders. The board did not take further action in open session on specific benefit programs for the family beyond the donation announcement.
The board adjourned the meeting and noted the next meeting date and location change to allow supervisors to attend Deputy Nunez’s funeral.
