Tipton police report rising call volume, new hires and festival security plans

The Tipton City police representative (Speaker 5) briefed the Board of Public Safety on operations and staffing Aug. 25, reporting traffic-stop and call-volume statistics, new hires, recruitment timelines and festival security plans.
The officer reported about 210 traffic stops in the prior month and that total calls for service are tracking ahead of expectations, with 3,503 calls to date toward a typical annual total of about 5,000. He introduced two new full-time hires, Catherine and Cameron, who had their first day and signed new-hire paperwork that requires board signatures.
Recruitment remains active: the police representative said he had several applications on his desk and that the department would run physical agility and written tests after a September 8 application deadline so backgrounds and interviews could proceed. "We will be three steps ahead if that officer were picked up by Westfield," he said, explaining the aim to complete testing and backgrounds promptly.
The department is also planning community engagement events and staffing adjustments. State police agreed to cover calls during a planned police–fire golf tournament so local officers can participate; sponsorships already cover event costs, the representative said. The annual Port Festival parade route was adjusted (lineup at Main and South streets) after Park Road became State Road 19 and because NDOT requires rented notification signs, a cost the festival committee declined to absorb.
On school resource officer coverage, the representative said SRO Maddox will take intermittent time off while Assistant Chief Lacey fills school duties from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., then completes road shift assignments; the school has been informed on coverage procedures.
The board thanked staff for recent community work; Board Member (Speaker 2) commended Sergeant Lazier for helping with National Night Out clean-up.
