Supporters cited Pike Powers’ role in downtown revitalization, business attraction and long‑term mentorship. Colette Pierce Burnett, CEO of Waterloo Greenway Conservancy, urged the council to approve the renaming to honor Powers’ civic leadership. “Renaming the street would be more than a signpost. It would inspire everyone who walks or bikes through that area to remember that our progress as a city is rooted in shared purpose,” she said.
The proposed Guitarland Neighborhood Park drew testimony from musicians and longtime Austin residents who asked the council to preserve the music legacy of the site without turning it into a live music venue. Van Wilkes, who taught music at 7506 Shadywood Drive, said the park should be a "meadow of reflection and a peaceful refuge" to honor Austin’s musical history.
Some speakers raised concerns about the expense of renaming and asked the council to weigh symbolic actions against larger fiscal priorities; others noted strong neighborhood support and petition activity. Both items moved forward as part of the consent items approved by the council.
