Board adopts policy allowing virtual-school students to compete in athletics

The Warren County Schools Board on Tuesday adopted a revision to curriculum policy 4.301 that explicitly permits virtual-school students zoned to a school to participate in interscholastic athletics in accordance with Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) and Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association (TMSAA) guidelines.
At the meeting the chair read the added language, which states that "Virtual school students shall be permitted to participate in accordance with TSSAA or TMSAA guidelines. If a school is not a member of these organizations, virtual school students that are zoned for the school shall be permitted to participate in interscholastic athletics to the same extent as other students." The chair said the change reflects a recent codification by the General Assembly and aligns district policy with existing TSSAA and TMSAA practice.
A board member moved to adopt the revision on first and all readings, the motion was seconded by Mister Brown and approved by voice vote. The chair said the district already has been allowing virtual students to try out and participate under TSSAA policy for the past two years and that the board is codifying the change in district policy to reflect state-level action.
The policy amendment will be incorporated into the district policy manual as policy 4.301; board members did not raise amendments to the language during the meeting.
