Policy committee advances required teacher and transportation policies to first read
Summary
On Nov. 4, 2025, Weston’s policy committee flagged required policies for first reading: duty‑free lunch for teachers (4113.2) and drug/alcohol testing for school bus drivers and contracted vendors (4212.42); both will be revised or moved forward for board consideration.

Erica (district staff) told the committee that policy 4113.2 (duty‑free lunch for teachers) is required by law and should be added to Weston’s code; members agreed but cautioned that policy language should not unreasonably constrain future contract negotiations. "I'd like to see the language of the contract reflected in the policy," one member said, while another warned that overly specific policy text could "tie our hands" during negotiations.
Erica introduced policy 4212.42 — drug and alcohol testing for school bus drivers — as another legally required policy. She explained that even when the district uses an external transportation vendor, the district is still required to have a policy that ensures compliance with federal and state rules, including testing, reporting and safety procedures tied to the Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991. The committee agreed the policy should move forward for a first read.
Board members asked that contract language continue to align with the policy and that the district require contracted vendors to maintain testing records. Erica said model policy language was used and she would ensure consistency between contract and policy language before submission to the board.
