The Lake Bluff Village Board on Oct. 27 approved the second reading of an ordinance to designate the residential building and sunken garden at 348 Foss Court (the Hubbard House, c.1895) as a Lake Bluff historic landmark.
Staff told the board that the Historic Preservation Commission had held a public hearing on Oct. 8 and unanimously recommended the designation; the property also appears on the HPC’s priority landmark list. Village materials noted the house’s history, including use as a retreat by Marshall Field & Company in the early 20th century. Owner Richard Holson (who said he goes by “Brush”) thanked the board for its consideration and said he plans to move to the property.
The board conducted a roll call vote on the second reading; trustees voted in favor and the ordinance carries the designation. The applicant noted the sunken garden’s southeast location on the lot and said the garden dates to at least the early 1900s.
