The presentation said the proposal would initially create eight soccer fields at Erwin Park and that staff is researching cost, maintenance, manpower and potential revenue. Staff emphasized that the city already has existing fields and that the council previously budgeted for field renovations; staff warned that the soccer fields could conflict with a 3.7‑mile trail at Irvin Park that is already 60% designed and for which funds have been pledged.
Board members expressed skepticism about the need for eight new fields, cited green‑space preservation and raised questions about parking, maintenance costs and whether the city should prioritize existing renovation commitments. One board member suggested piloting one or two fields rather than building an entire complex.
Staff said the item is intended for transparency and early vetting: they will evaluate feasibility, revenue potential, maintenance needs, parking impacts and any conflicts with projects already under design or with grant commitments before bringing a formal recommendation to council.
