Tumwater board discusses extending public comment and readies representation for fall general assembly

Directors discussed whether the board should change the way it communicates the 30‑minute public‑comment cap and how to handle larger sign‑up lists. Several directors said the public should be told in advance whether the board expects to extend the public‑comment period so speakers can plan to attend. “As long if we go into it knowing that there are more than 10 people…and that the assumption is that we're going to expand the public speaking time,” one director said, proposing a clearer sign‑up message and the option to move public comment to later in the agenda when needed.

On legislative representation, directors debated timing and continuity for the board’s representative role ahead of the fall general assembly. Director Adams (S4) raised concerns about accepting the role in July if they may not remain on the board after November; board members discussed shared workflows (a spreadsheet to collect positions and a group polling approach) so the representative can carry board guidance to the assembly. Board members agreed to prepare the WASDA/WASA positions spreadsheet and asked board members to review materials ahead of the Sept. 20 general assembly. One director volunteered to take on the role this cycle and the board agreed to support that work by circulating the materials and recording member feedback in advance.
