The Burlington School Committee approved a fiscal‑year operating transfer of $250,000 into the district’s accrued liability reserve to cover future payments for earned leave when employees retire, administration said. The reserve was established by town meeting in 2021 under Chapter 40, Section 13D and may be used only for accrued leave liabilities.
Finance staff (identified in the meeting as Nicole) told the committee the district’s total accrued liability is approximately $1.2 million and that the reserve currently holds about $750,000; the requested $250,000 would move the fund closer to the modeled target. The presenters emphasized that no new money is being requested and that the transfer would come from available FY25 salaries.
Member Chris made the motion to approve the transfer and the chair seconded; after a short discussion the committee voted in favor, recorded as 4–0.
What’s next: Administration said the reserve will reduce the risk of a near‑term retirement wave affecting operating budgets; the committee approved the transfer as presented.
