Board proclaims August as Child Support Awareness Month and Economic Services Appreciation Month; staff recognitions honored

The Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted two proclamations addressing child support and economic services.
Deputy Director Thomas Mitchell and county staff outlined program scale in introducing the child support proclamation: they said Cabarrus County Child Support Services manages about 4,500 active cases and that the program collects roughly $12,000,000 annually to support approximately 12,000 children. While reading the adopted proclamation, county staff cited SFY 2025 collections of about $12,850,000 and affirmed the county’s commitment to helping children receive financial support.
Robert Cox and Heather Altman read an Economic Services Appreciation proclamation noting that in FY 2025 the county’s Medicaid eligibility work supported local benefits totaling about $144,850,624 and that there were 58,839 active Medicaid recipients and 24,080 active food and nutrition recipients in the county. The board voted to adopt that proclamation by voice vote.
Separately, the board recognized Dawn Gustafson, Emergency Management Planner 2, for her leadership of the county shelter task force and presented a County Manager Award of Excellence, and the sheriff’s office honored Sergeant Marsha Williams on her upcoming retirement and career contributions to training and detention operations.
