Woodbridge police propose ban on e‑bikes, scooters on sidewalks; hearing set for Aug. 26

Sergeant Angelo, a traffic enforcement supervisor, told the Woodbridge Township Council on Aug. 12 that a sharp increase in e‑bikes and other micro‑mobility devices has created safety hazards on sidewalks and near schools and downtown.
The proposed ordinance would prohibit bicycles, tricycles, scooters, class 1–3 electric bicycles, mopeds, hoverboards, segways and low‑speed electric scooters on public sidewalks and township‑owned parking lots. Sergeant Angelo said the rules would combine clear prohibitions, consistent consequences and rider education, and he cited other municipalities with similar laws.
Sergeant Angelo also referenced recent crashes and noted a July 17 death in the state involving an e‑bike; he said the ordinance does not apply to certain operators under age 17 in limited circumstances, and that permitted event uses with a township or county permit would be excluded.
Council moved to publish the ordinances (letters e–i) by consent, schedule homeowner review for Aug. 18, 2025, and set the public hearing for Aug. 26, 2025 at 6 p.m. Several council members thanked the police for taking action and urged continued public education alongside enforcement.
The draft ordinance wording and enforcement details (fines, signage, exemptions and vehicle classification) were not read in full at the meeting; the council directed that the proposal be posted for review and that the hearing proceed on Aug. 26.
