Abington honors CFO Christopher Lionetti as he retires after 32 years

The Abington Board of School Directors honored Chief Financial Officer Christopher Lionetti at its Sept. 9 meeting as he prepares to retire after 32 years with the district, 16 of them leading the business office and serving as board secretary.
"Chris oversaw the financing of a multitude of significant initiatives across Abington School District," Superintendent Dr. Mowery said, listing projects Lionetti helped guide, including the construction and renovation of multiple elementary schools, the high school athletic stadium and groundwork for the new middle school approved in May.
Board members offered personal tributes. "There's a trust that I have built that you have built," board member Mister Allen said, praising Lionetti's calm presentation of numbers during budget season. Colleagues credited him for patient mentorship, clear explanations of complex financial material and steady leadership during difficult fiscal moments.
Lionetti accepted the recognition and reflected on his career. "I've had a chance over the last few months to think about the last 32 years, and it's filled with gratitude," he said, thanking central staff, administrators and the board.
As part of the transition, the board elected Patricia Denicola as board secretary effective Sept. 22, 2025; Lionetti said he has worked with Denicola during the handover in recent weeks and expects a smooth transition.
The meeting closed with further tributes and well wishes from board members and colleagues before the board adjourned.
