Commissioners approve referendum to let Pickens County voters decide on distilled‑spirits package sales

The Pickens County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 18 voted to send a resolution to the Board of Elections to place a referendum on the May 19, 2026 general primary ballot asking voters in unincorporated Pickens County whether to allow package‑store sales of distilled spirits.
A commissioner emphasized that the board was not taking a stance for or against the measure but was giving county voters the option to decide. "This is not a Board of Commissioners stance in favor or opposed to. It's simply to be able to put it out for the voters to have an option," one commissioner said during the meeting.
The board motioned, seconded and approved sending the resolution to the elections board; if the Board of Elections accepts the resolution the referendum will appear on the May 2026 primary ballot.
