Nassau County honors first Road & Bridge apprenticeship graduates and employees of the quarter

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners recognized the county’s first Road & Bridge Apprenticeship Program graduates and county employees of the quarter during its Aug. 20 meeting.
Road & Bridge staff described a multi-year training program that combined classroom and hands-on experience at the county training yard; presenters said the first graduates performed in vendor-run equipment rodeos and have moved into lead-operator roles on projects such as milling, ditch work and drainage upgrades. Staff said three employees graduated in 2025 and forecast another three to five trainees next year.
Commissioners praised the apprenticeship as a workforce pipeline that creates upward mobility and helps the county retain experienced operators in other key areas. “This gives you all an opportunity to establish a career here, the longevity, upward mobility,” Commissioner Gray said.
The board also recognized Naomi Davis and Keisha Detlefs from Public Works and Senior Planner Joshua Macbeth as employees of the quarter; Brandy Carvalho, Director of Strategic Advancement, highlighted Macbeth’s work leading Timber to Tides and CLAM-related community engagement.
County chiefs presented years-of-service awards to employees including Lieutenant Bill Harvey for 20 years of service and Megan from OMB for two decades on the county budget team. Commissioners and attendees offered thanks and congratulations at the meeting.
