Coast City Volunteer Fire & Rescue plans $130,000 used engine purchase; not seeking county funding

Coast City Volunteer Fire & Rescue presented its plan to purchase a used 2009 engine priced at $130,000 and said the acquisition would be funded through the department’s fundraising and the sale of an older apparatus.
Russ Caden, president of Coast City Volunteer Fire & Rescue, told commissioners the department ‘‘is not asking the county for any additional funds’’ and credited local fundraising and recent community events for the majority of the money needed. The acquisition will allow the volunteer department to upgrade its fleet at a lower cost than buying new equipment.
Commissioners praised the department’s volunteer fundraising efforts and said the purchase helps keep local taxes lower by reducing the need for county funding for capital outlays. The board did not take a formal vote on county funding for the purchase and no county appropriation was requested at the meeting.
