Craven County recognized for CRS Class 7; unincorporated policyholders to gain larger flood‑insurance discounts

State and county officials on Nov. 3 recognized Craven County’s work on floodplain management after the county achieved a Community Rating System (CRS) Class 7 designation, which raises the flood‑insurance premium discount available to eligible policyholders.
Steve Garrett, state coordinator for the National Flood Insurance Program with North Carolina Emergency Management, told the board Craven County ‘‘has 2,461 flood insurance policies through the National Flood Insurance Program, which makes up $697,000,000 worth of flood‑insurance coverage,’’ and said the new Class 7 rating increases the discount available to policyholders (Garrett said policyholders receive discounts up to 15 percent with the new classification).
County Manager noted the CRS work and the resulting rate change would mean ‘‘another 5% reduction in folks’ flood insurance rates in Craven County’’ and later stated that roughly 6,000 parcels — about 10% of county properties — are in the flood‑exposure pool and will benefit in the unincorporated area. The manager and Steve Garrett described the CRS recognition as the result of sustained field work and program administration by county staff.
Steve Garrett singled out county staff — including Jason Frederick and Chad Straub — and county leadership for their role in achieving the score and presented recognition to the county’s CRS coordinator, Jason Frederick.
Officials said the additional discount applies to policyholders in the county’s unincorporated areas; municipalities such as New Bern and Riverbend run separate CRS programs and have their own ratings and discounts.
