Council backs PennDOT TASA grant application for Bridgeport Spur Trail

Bridgeport Borough Council on Oct. 28 authorized a grant application to PennDOT’s Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside (TASA) program to fund construction of the proposed Bridgeport Spur Trail.
Administration described the project as a roughly half-mile, 10-foot-wide multi-use trail that would reuse an abandoned rail bed through the borough’s commercial corridor, improve safety, add lighting and trash receptacles, and connect local streets to the Chester Valley Trail. "The estimated project at this point the estimated project cost is somewhere in the vicinity of $650,000," the borough representative said during the public presentation.
The borough noted TASA would cover construction costs while the borough would be responsible for design expenses; council previously set aside approximately $100,000 to $125,000 in next year’s capital funding for project design. Administration also warned of PennDOT crossing rules: a trail crossing cannot be located within 150 feet of a signalized intersection, requiring an alternative routing at the Depot/Fourth Street area and a short on-street connector.
Councilmembers voiced broad support for the application, highlighting safety and the prospect of bringing cyclists into Bridgeport’s commercial district. A motion to approve the grant request was made, seconded and approved on voice vote. Administration said the TASA application deadline is Oct. 31 and asked the council for a resolution endorsing the submission.
