La Serna High School golf team honored after historic Division 1 Southern Section title

The Whittier City Council honored the La Serna High School golf team during its Sept. 23 meeting for winning the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship.
Mayor Venatieri introduced Superintendent Monica Oviedo, school board member Russell Castaneda Calleros and Principal Griselda Castro and invited Coach Jared Zavala and the team to the lectern. Coach Zavala recounted the season's achievements, saying the team won the Del Rio League, advanced through sectionals and finished fourth at state competition. "We did," Coach Zavala said when the mayor asked if they had won by one stroke.
Council members presented certificates to players including Joseph Gutierrez, Jacob Torres, Hill Wang, Tyler Yao, Andrew Rodriguez and Jacob Palomares. Coach Zavala noted several players had college offers or commitments: he said Joseph Gutierrez had "verbally committed to Wisconsin," Andrew Rodriguez "verbally committed to Long Beach State" and Hill Wang "verbally committed to Pepperdine."
The council praised the team's on-course results and academic emphasis, and invited district and school officials to stand with the players for recognition.
No official action was required to recognize the team; the presentation was ceremonial and took place near the start of the regular meeting.
