Tampa mobility officials outline storm‑season push: generators by June 1, $11M for permanent backups

Tampa city mobility and stormwater officials laid out a stepped plan to improve storm‑season readiness at a virtual town hall, saying they will deploy temporary generators to pump stations in June, step up micro‑scale improvements in flood‑prone neighborhoods and accelerate inspections and cleaning of pipes and ditches.
“We do not prevent all flooding,” Josh Cascio, communications coordinator for the Mobility Department, told viewers. “We can never fully stop flooding… but we can relieve flooding, especially from your typical summer storms.”
Mobility Director Vic Bide and operations manager Brian Rodger said the pump‑station retrofits that allow temporary generators to connect should be finished by May 1, with testing that month and generator availability for use beginning June 1. Brian Rodger said the city is forming a rapid response team to turn generators on, refuel them and keep pump stations operating after a storm; vendors will deliver standby generators to sites within 24 hours of activation, the city said.
Yuan Li, head of stormwater engineering, said the city has added monthly maintenance reporting and is proceeding with a watershed master‑planning effort to identify longer‑term capital investments. The master plan, she said, could increase the city’s Community Rating System discount for flood insurance by a further 10 percentage points if projects and policies qualify.
Chief design engineer Jeff DeBosier and planning engineers described a sequence of micro projects (inlet widening, improved grates and short pipe extensions), larger capital work (Upper Peninsula, MacDill 48) and ongoing maintenance: vacuum truck pipe cleaning, TV inspections and ditch grading. Operations manager Rodger said crews swept nearly 922 curb miles and removed 230 tons of debris in a recent reporting period and that the city maintains roughly 600 miles of storm pipes, 180 miles of ditches and 148 retention ponds.
On check valves and flap gates: Alex Awad explained that the city has installed nine flap gates/check valves in locations that qualify and that these devices require roughly six inches of upstream pressure to open and must be chosen with awareness of local tide and rainfall patterns.
