Round Lake students design Loteria deck with Chicago Bears, appear on local morning show

Round Lake CUSD 116 students at Round Lake High School showcased a work-based learning project created in partnership with the Chicago Bears, school staff told the Board of Education. The project asked art students to design a custom Loteria card deck that interwove Latino heritage and Chicago Bears branding.
The board heard that the Bears’ creative team provided professional feedback and that the final decks were used during Hispanic Heritage Month at Bears outreach events. “We were very grateful to Mia Lemus at the Chicago Bears, our principal, Mr. Peterson, [and] other district administrators who supported this additional very unexpected opportunity,” a district presenter said during the meeting.
Students who worked on the deck described the experience and the attention it brought. Senior Jaden Taylor said the project gave him “the chance to show the creativity and color that Round Lake has to offer.” Another senior, Evelyn Martinez, said working with classmates “was amazing” and that being recognized made students feel “important.” Kyrie Trujillo said the short-notice opportunity led to personal growth: “It let me know something about myself — I really like speaking and being social.”
District staff said the final pieces were printed by the Bears and that several students appeared on Fox 32’s Good Day Chicago to discuss the project. School leaders told the board they hope to continue similar partnerships that expose students to professional creative workflows.
The presentation concluded with applause from board members and a request that the district pursue more such work-based learning partnerships and public-facing opportunities for students.
