The Colfax City Council unanimously approved a resolution directing city staff to work with the U.S. Postal Service Address Management System (AMS), the Federal Communications Commission and congressional offices to have Colfax physical addresses validated in the AMS and related address‑validation systems.
Councilmember Burrows explained the problem: large portions of Colfax are treated as P.O.‑box delivery areas in AMS, which many carriers and E‑911 services use as an authoritative source for address validation. That mismatch has caused residents trouble receiving property tax bills, online deliveries and obtaining new cellular lines with validated E‑911 service.
Council members noted that many major carriers draw on AMS for address validation and that prior local work (including custom mapping submitted to UPS years ago) had improved delivery for some carriers. The resolution directs staff to collaborate with federal stakeholders and, if needed, create mapping (ArcGIS) and other substantiation materials to submit to AMS and coordinate updates that should propagate through other delivery databases.
Council passed the resolution by unanimous voice vote and asked staff to begin outreach and mapping work.
What happens next: Staff will pursue AMS validation, coordinate with the city’s congressional office and FCC contacts as needed, and prepare materials (maps, address lists) for AMS submittal.
