Commission OKs Piggly Wiggly renovation and expansion; project responds to ALDOT entrance changes

The Homewood City Planning Commission voted unanimously to forward an amended development plan for the Piggly Wiggly property at 3000 Independence Drive to City Council. The plan would add about 7,500 square feet to the store, renovate the existing building, improve parking circulation and add approximately 114 new parking spots for an estimated total near 153 spaces.
Architect Robert Thompson and civil engineer Josh Donnell said the redesign responds in part to an Alabama Department of Transportation decision to close or change an existing Highway 31 entrance. Thompson told commissioners the redevelopment reorients the store entry toward the interior parking and adds retail frontage on Highway 31 and Oxmoor Road. Donnell described proposed stormwater inlets and a stormwater-management area in the southwest corner of the site to handle additional impervious area from expanded parking.
Commissioners asked about truck routing and hours; the project team said the loading-dock locations and routing would remain the same as current operations. Commissioners praised the plan’s landscaping and neighborhood accommodations. The commission approved the amended development plan and will forward a positive recommendation (7–0) to City Council.
