Mariposa County moves to start $2 million roadside vegetation project; first task order set at $157,771

Public Works Director Shannon Hansen told the Board on Sept. 16 that Mariposa County received a competitive roadside vegetation grant (presented as $2,000,000) and plans to focus removal and fuels reduction on major and minor collectors to reduce road-originated fire starts.
Hansen described the first step: Task Order No. 1 with Galvin Preservation Services Inc. not to exceed $157,771 to begin the Mariposa County Roadside Vegetation Treatment Project. She said the county will target roughly 132 miles of high-traffic collector roads and will pare back the list if bid prices exceed estimates. Hansen also thanked internal staff and partner crews that are assisting with fuels reduction and the county’s small fuels-reduction team.
Supervisor comments framed the project as a public-safety priority: the chair noted many wildland fires begin along roads and praised the project for reducing risk. The consent agenda that included the CA 22 task order was approved earlier in the meeting as part of the consent motion (the consent agenda was approved 4-0, Supervisor Poe excused).
County officials said the roadside vegetation crew had been reconstituted about two years ago and that coordination with state/contract crews makes the project feasible.
