City manager reports wastewater decommissioning, greenway bridge work and new public art

City Manager Jonathan Blanton reported several completed and upcoming projects during the Sept. 22 Mount Holly City Council meeting.
Blanton said the city recently held a decommissioning event at the wastewater treatment plant with Charlotte Water and that the system is "finally online with the city of Charlotte 100%"; he added "we are not discharging anything into the river." Blanton credited Charlotte Water and local staff and said the state general assembly provided $15,000,000 in direct allocations for the decommissioning effort.
Blanton also highlighted arts and place-making projects: a ribbon cutting for a new mural at Ida Rankin Elementary School by artists Sarah and Andrew McWilson, and a mosaic titled "the Catawba River" by Thomas Thune and Patrick Robertson visible from South Main Street. He noted River Street Park work has begun on a bridge that will connect greenways, with a target completion in mid-2026, and said a new water tower near the north fire station is expected to come online in mid- to late October after an 18-month project.
Blanton encouraged the community to attend upcoming events including National Night Out on Oct. 7 and Mount Holly Nights on Oct. 10, and thanked staff and council for participation in recent ribbon cuttings and community events.
