The board voted Aug. 19 to authorize the administration to submit required maximum class‑size exception waivers for the 2025–26 school year for any pre‑K through fourth‑grade sections exceeding the statutory limit of 22 students. Administration said the only change from last year is that fifth grade emergency add is set at 25 (with two current sections at that size) and that pre‑K 3 and pre‑K 4 classes will now automatically include a paraeducator (two adults to the class) rather than waiting until a threshold is reached.
Miss Macias reviewed last year's and current waiver counts: the initial submission the prior year totaled 44 waivers and the district expects approximately 50 waivers if submitted today, with a projected total of 81–90 for the full year. She also described the four statutory reasons used when submitting waivers (capacity to add a section, balanced class loads, lack of teachers, threshold emergency add) and said parents receive letters when a class exceeds 22.
Trustees discussed whether transfer‑policy changes or enrollment caps might better equalize load across campuses; administration said boundary and attendance‑zone work is planned and that a committee will make recommendations later in the year. The board approved the motion to allow administrative submission of waivers (6–0).
