The Yuma County Board of Supervisors authorized staff to apply for a state parks and trails Land and Water Conservation grant to fund Phase 2 of the Foothills Community Park and committed to a local match if the grant is awarded.
Diana Villos, Community Planning Director, described Phase 2 as an expansion of existing amenities with an estimated cost "a little bit more than $1,400,000," and said the grant requires a 50% local match that equates to about $742,168. The board voted, in separate motions, to (a) authorize staff to file the application (grant due Sept. 30), (b) set aside the matching funds from the general‑fund reserve should the award be made, and (c) authorize the county administrator to sign required grant documents.
Phase 2 scope includes extending a 10‑foot walking path, added green space, a dog park with amenities, exercise equipment, landscaping and community‑requested features such as benches and grills, Villos said. Board members supported the request and highlighted positive community reception to Phase 1 amenities and the new parks department’s work.
What’s next: If the grant is awarded, construction is expected to begin in late 2026; staff will return with budget amendments and project schedules.
