Council authorizes application for up to $100,000 in state urban forestry funds

The Euclid City Council on Aug. 18 authorized the planning and development director to submit a grant application to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ 2025 Urban Forestry Grant Program for up to $100,000.
Urban Forester Miss Lathwell told council the funds would be used primarily to resume and complete a comprehensive urban forestry plan after previously discussed USDA/IRA funding was cut. The grant would finance planning, a best-practices manual to supplement updated ordinances, and a modest planting program intended to work alongside a community development block grant (CDBG) planting effort; recipients would agree to water new trees for three years. Lathwell said the city has previously inventoried more than 9,000 street trees and several thousand planting sites.
A small portion of the grant would cover about $7,000 of staff salary to support implementation; the forester said planting obligations would be matched to residents who requested trees. Council voted to approve the resolution.
Next steps: Administration will submit the ODNR application and, if awarded, coordinate planting with CDBG work and resident commitments to tree care.
